“The best preparation for tomorrow is doing your best today.” – H. Jackson Brown Jr.
Take a moment before you continue reading this and close your eyes. Be aware of the moment you are in; the sounds and smells around you, the source of light you are reading by, all that you can touch within arm’s reach and the way you feel in this exact moment. Are you happy or sad, excited or anxious? Whatever the case may be, your emotions as you know them in this moment are a culmination of all that has transpired in your life recently. It’s amazing how quickly our moods can change given the circumstances, like how a spilled cup of coffee can make or break an entire day. It’s also amazing how much control over our lives we can have despite the circumstances, depending on how we look at them.
If you spill your cup of coffee as you begin your day, you might laugh it off in jest and think “ah, it can only get better.” On the other had, you might become angry, wondering why nothing can go your way and asking yourself “how can it get any worse?” The fact is, we are the sole proprietors of our emotions, and the only person who can make or break your day is you, given the way you see things. Furthermore, there is only so much that we can do with today, so why waste it? Why toil away suffering today in stressing over that which has passed and dreading that which is to come? Today is all we really have, and we are responsible for making the most of it.
It matters not from where you come, where you are going or where you have been. If life has beaten you down and left you wondering if it can ever get better, do what you can with today to make it so. Stand up to the skeletons in your closet and remind yourself that you have left them in your past for a reason. Live life day by day, unapologetically and with nothing but love and good intentions for those around you. If you have a past you are ashamed of or a future you are afraid of, do what you can with today to make it better, and make today count. With each new day comes a new opportunity to change your life for the better, so boldly go into each day with the mindset that you will make the most of it. Once you start looking for the good things, they’ll start making themselves clear to you.
Why wait any longer to live the life you have always dreamed of? Each day is a blessing; be grateful, and be aware of all that you can do to positively impact your life and the lives of those around you. Take a moment each day to be fully aware of all that you have to be grateful for, then go on with your day and don’t let those blessings go to waste. Today is a beautiful blessing, the first day of the rest of your life. Make the most of it.
