Relapse Prevention Therapy
While clients are at the facility, we make sure to take them through Relapse Prevention therapy. It is one of the most essential parts of recovery and life-long road to sobriety. According to national phycologist.com, relapse prevention therapy is described as a behavioral self-control program designed to teach how to anticipate and cope with the problems of relapse. This is super important for us because we understand that those struggling with addiction tend to return to treatment due to relapsing. We believe our clients are strong enough mentally, and can regain control of their lives.
Prevention needs to start early and before temptation presents itself. In fact, a comprehensive relapse prevention plan accounts for social interactions, emotional triggers and the development of positive coping mechanisms.
What is a Relapse?
Today, addiction is known to be a chronic mental disease. As known as a relapsing disease because many people even years after treatment experience cravings. Over the years the definition of drug relapse has revolved. However, the science and medical world today agrees that addiction is a disease and relapse is a struggling symptom verses a lack of willpower. It is a process in which a person recoverying returns to the use of drugs or alcohol. This is generally what research is suggesting, and is why relapse prevention planning is crucial to life-long recovery. It is estimated that 85% of individuals return to drug or alcohol use after treatment if relapse prevention programs are not continued. Because individuals are still vulnerable to cravings after treatment, relapse prevention therapies are in place to combat temptations and target future triggers before they occur.
“According to Recovery.org, preventing an alcohol or drug relapse is more than just saying ‘no’ in the face of temptation”
Why Relapse Prevention Therapy?
We know that when the body feels good there’s a better chance our minds will perform better. While at the facility we want our clients to gather as many tools as possible to combat addiction. This will take mental strength and effort and we believe that our massage therapy program will help. At SJRP are all about making the recovery process go as smoothly as possible. It might be difficult at times for a client to talk about their past and personal life and it may even hurt and be uncomfortable during times at treatment. This is normal because the client is learning how to let go of the past and develop new and positive habits that are unfamiliar.
During the detox period, the body starts to withdraw from drugs and alcohol. Most clients experience physical symptoms that range from mild to severe, causing the body to be in pain and uncomfortable. At times, clients might not always know why they feel the way they do, and some are even unable to verbalize their feeling and thoughts. This is why we launched our massage and full body healing therapy that allows our clients to relieve stress in other healthy ways.
We believe that it is imperative to incorporate massage and total body healing therapy into your treatment plan.
SJRP’s Relapse Prevention Program
Not every method is going to be fit for everyone. At St. John’s Recovery Place, we offer a handful of options for clients to experience to find what works best for them. The most common method is the 12-Step program. A twelve-step program is a set of guiding principles outlining a course of action for recovery from addiction, compulsion, or other behavioral problems. A program that was developed by Alcohol Anonymous, builds on methodologies that in order to be abstinent from substance abuse, one must do so by surrendering to a higher power. Not everyone is religious or spiritual and may not connect with the 12-step program, in this case we offer other fellowship programs to match up to what the client is most comfortable with. We provide literature and tools from AA, NA, and CA to clients who are open. We also have aftercare services that follow up with clients after leaving treatment, and provide opportunities to return to the facility to have group and one on one therapies.
Our alumni program is also a key component to relapse prevention. Our alumni program is for clients who have graduated from treatment. Throughout the year, clients and their families are invited back to the facility for alumni events for BBQ’s, and game and movies nights. We also offer opportunities for alumni to speak to clients at the facility to give encouragement and share their stories.
