LBGTQ+ Addiction Treatment
Anyone can fall victim to addiction. Some demographics are more susceptible than others. This particular demographic is the LGBTQ+ community, (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning). National studies have shown that there is a large disparity between heterosexual peers and addiction, and the LGBTQ+ community and addiction. For instance, the LGBTQ+ community is three times more likely to develop mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression than their heterosexual peers. This is because many of these individuals are suffering from physical or sexual abuse at home or have experienced abuse in the past. This community of people is often poorly judged because of their struggling identity. They often experience discrimination at home, in the workplace, at school, and in their communities. Sadly, they struggle with acceptance everywhere, most commonly at home with their families. After years of trauma, many members of the LGBTQ+ community have developed mental health disorders. To alleviate some of the symptoms they are experiencing, they turn to drugs and alcohol. The long-term use of drugs and alcohol worsen the symptoms of some of their mental health issues while developing a dependency for drugs and alcohol. This occurrence of having a mental health issue and struggling with addiction is commonly known as a co-occurring disorder.
Today the colorful members of the LGBTQ+ are struggling from mental health and addiction more then ever. At SJRP, we couldn’t imagine having a treatment facility that didn’t focus lots of our energies on this particular community. With suicidal rates climbing and drug overdoses occurring more frequently, we have created a place for this community to finally get the help they need.
