Health insurance is often a challenging concept to comprehend. Everyone in the United States needs health insurance, but very few understand precisely what it is and how it works to its fullest extent. The good news is, you do not need to fully comprehend every aspect of your health insurance plan for it to work for you. Health insurance is a necessary service to purchase for you to afford your medical treatments and some prescription medications. Health insurance helps you pay for your regular medical maintenance needs and can help you receive any extra services you may need.
If you or a loved one suffers from a substance use disorder or addiction, it is possible to use your health insurance package to help you pay for your rehab services. Still, even though every health insurance provider makes allowances for substance abuse treatments, not every program plan will work the same. Some insurances may be able to provide you with more assistance than others. Navigating the insurance world can prove challenging but gaining a general understanding of how health insurance works and learning to use it to your benefit is not impossible.
The Basics of Health Insurance
Health insurance coverage exists to help consumers pay for their necessary medical treatments and services. These services may include specialized equipment, regular upkeep and maintenance, emergency or non-emergency hospital care, medications, and individual providers. Health care coverage is a nationwide staple of service for the American people, but not all insurance providers are available in every State. And for the insurance providers that operate in various states, their terms of service may vary with the region they operate in.
Not all insurance plans, providers, or services are the same. There are several types of insurance plans you can pay to receive the necessary finances for the treatments you wish to receive. Some of these plans may limit the kinds of services you can receive, the providers you seek treatment from, or the pharmacies you may use, etc. Depending on your insurance provider, the region of the nation you live in, and how many converge plans providers are offering in your area; you can have the potential to choose from one of four car levels; bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. Some of the different types of insurance plans you can enroll in include:
- Exclusive Provider Organizations (EPOs): Where your care services cover only specific providers, specialists, or hospitals within your insurance’s network.
- Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs): Where your care services may limit you to specific providers within your network of care, except for emergency services. But may also ask that you live within a particular region of a State to be eligible for coverage.
- Point of Service (POS): Where you can use providers and other health care services outside of your provider’s network but may pay more for the use of such care. You will need to acquire a referral from your primary care physician to use outside providers and still receive coverage.
- Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs): Where you can use providers, specialists, hospitals, and all other types of medical care services outside of your network, but you will pay more for using such care outlets. Whereas if you use the in-network care services, you can spend less on your copays.
Not every insurance plan will be able to provide you with optimal care for every condition. Traditionally, the more you pay into an insurance policy, the more you may be able to get out of it in terms of comprehensive services. Still, even affordable health insurance plans can help you get the care that you need. And if you or a loved one of yours is struggling with a substance use disorder or addiction, you can feel reassured knowing that by law, your insurance coverage provider must allow for some form of drug and alcohol rehab services. These addiction treatment services may often only cover traditional healing methods through your insurance, but any assistance towards recovery is a step in the right direction. To make looking for the right insurance plan for you a little easier, here are a few insurance definitions you may find helpful to know:
- Network: The cumulative source of all doctors, specialists, hospitals, suppliers, etc., that have a contract to work with your insurance provider to provide services to consumers.
- Out-of-network: The cumulative sources of all doctors, specialists, hospitals, suppliers, etc., that do not have a contract with your insurance provider.
- Copay or copayment: A set price or amount that you pay as your share in the cost of your treatment. This can be the amount you pay for a specialist visit or what you pay each time you see your doctor.
- Deductible: The amount of money you owe your insurance provider to pay before your health coverage can begin to take effect.
- Premium: The amount you pay towards your health insurance plan each month. This amount may be taken directly from your paycheck at each pay period automatically if you so choose at enrollment.
- Coinsurance: The share of your cost for your treatment services that you will pay for through copays, etc. Generally, this amounts to around 20% of the total cost of treatment services.
The specific services and coverage available to you will depend on the state you live in and the type of insurance package in which you enroll. Not all drug and alcohol rehab facilities you will have an interest in will accept your insurance policy. Still, fear not, as there are plenty of addiction rehab centers that will be able to work with you and for you on every level, including accepting your health care coverage provider. Accepting that you may need assistance with a drug or alcohol use problem takes a lot of courage. Working through addiction rehab can feel overwhelming and scary. Still, the good news is, you can beat substance abuse, and your insurance provider can help you get one step closer to successfully starting your recovery journey.
