Intensive Outpatient Care

Every year, millions of Americans struggle with the effects of mental health issues and substance abuse. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse and other American addiction centers, many people who struggle with substance abuse issues never receive the care they need.

And for a good reason.

Substance Use Disorders Affect Millions

Seeking addiction treatment services and starting inpatient programs can be incredibly scary. As a result, many people who need substance abuse treatment to recover from use disorders or mental illness avoid undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Additionally, many of these people also fear what their behavioral health issues are doing to them and their family members.

They often fear the behavioral health industry and do not want to explore additional treatment options.

Even Though Addiction Treatment Services are Out There, Many People Still Aren’t Receiving the Help They Need

In years past, the most significant challenge the Mental Health Services Administration had in enrolling individuals in residential treatment programs was the lack of availability. Location played a significant role in keeping people from seeking and attending inpatient treatment.

But today, seeking addiction treatment services is easier than ever. Hundreds, if not thousands, of addiction centers exist across the country. All of these treatment centers render medical advice, group support, and individual therapy sessions to clients in need!

The Challenges Addiction Treatment Programs Face Before Starting

There are many reasons why a person may feel apprehensive about enrolling in addiction treatment. Some people feel embarrassed about falling as far into substance abuse as they have. And they want to keep their condition away from their family and friends’ view as much as possible.

Still, for others, their biggest fear may be about finding a rehab center that is close to home.

Another common fear amongst individuals looking into rehab is not being able to afford their treatment center. Some people with co-occurring disorders fear their condition is too complex for a treatment center to treat. In the end, we assure you, there is a treatment center out there for everyone. You have absolutely no reason to fear seeking addiction treatment.

The behavioral health industry has grown exponentially over recent years and is here to help you heal!

Enrolling in Inpatient Treatment for Drug or Alcohol Abuse Can Be Scary

Mental health disorders do a great deal of damage to individuals and their families. And as a form of mental illness, substance abuse can make people believe there will be adverse consequences with enrolling in addition treatment.

Despite the many recovery benefits a treatment center can offer an individual, there are still people who insist on dealing with their mental health issues on their own.

Though it is possible in some cases for individuals to treat their addiction at home, it can be unsafe without the help of a professional treatment team.

Enrolling in Rehab Programs can be Nerveracking

As chronic illnesses with characteristics that rob individuals of their self-control and impulses, substance use disorders can wreak havoc on an individual’s life.

And not just where active abuse is concerned. Even when trying to recover, the withdrawal side effects a person can experience as a result of stopping problematic drug or alcohol use can have life-threatening consequences. Suppose you try to treat yourself without proper medication management and a quality treatment provider, you can be facing a medical emergency on your own, which could lead to dire circumstances.

Plenty of People are Afraid of Enrolling in the Wrong Treatment Centers

We promise you, there are many more addiction healthcare providers with exceptional quality care standards than not.

Take one step at a time in seeking help. You’ll find the rehab center that works best for you and your needs.

From Inpatient Programs to Intensive Outpatient Treatment and Beyond

Today, there are many different kinds of addiction treatment options. By far, the most well-known form of a rehab center is inpatient treatment. But, recovery programs extend well beyond the scope of residential treatment programs.

The most common addiction programs include:

Usually, individuals working through addiction centers start treatment in medical detox programs. Once they complete detox, the client moves into an inpatient rehab center. From here, individuals can either choose to participate in a partial hospitalization program (PHO), intensive outpatient treatment, or an outpatient facility for their next recovery phase.

What are Intensive Outpatient Programs?

Inpatient alcohol and drug rehab was never designed to stand alone.

Although these services are not always used alongside traditional residential rehab, an intensive outpatient program (IOP) has a lot to offer clients when residential treatment is over. As services that stand very similar to outpatient programs, intensive outpatient programs, and PHPs are transitionary rehab center treatment programs.

Thus, what this means is, intensive outpatient care is used as a bridge between residential treatment and outpatient programs.

These programs are meant to care for clients who no longer need 24-7 supervision but are still in need of a more structured treatment center schedule to keep them on track.

Usually, it is here that clients begin to adjust from living on their campus treatment facility to attending recovery programs weekly while living at home. But an IOP can also be completed in a hospital or other professional care-based setting. Typically, these programs only last a couple of weeks before a client moves on to the next phase of recovery.

IOP Programs, Support Groups, Individual Therapy and More

During an intensive outpatient program (IOP), a client’s rehab schedule begins to look drastically different. It is during this time; individuals begin to experience more freedom again.

Of course, not every person who enrolls in substance abuse treatment will need to make use of intensive treatment. But, for those who do need the extra help adjusting to their new support groups and therapy practices, IOP treatment is the perfect way to start.

IOP Treatment Usually Lasts Two Weeks

Clients can begin different group therapy sessions and individual therapy sessions during this time. These therapies will help them adjust to commuting to their treatment provider to receive care.

Even though many individuals may never need to use IOP treatment, healthcare providers recognize intensive care for its exceptional quality care standards.

Generally, services they engage in during their IOP program will look very similar to those they participated in during inpatient treatment. The main difference between the treatment options is the amount of one-on-one time the client has with their treatment provider and of course, they are now living at home rather than in a facility full time.

These Intensive Behavioral Therapy Plans Normally Include:
  • Life skill training
  • Case management
  • Psychological support
  • Medical services
  • Psychiatric services
  • Evidence-based treatments
  • Family therapy
  • Individual therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Support groups
  • Condition assessments
  • Comprehensive treatment planning, development, and conduction

In intensive treatment practices, the best treatment centers will focus primarily on family therapy and relapse prevention groups.

Still, it is possible for individuals who have been struggling with things like substance abuse and eating disorders to receive additional services like art therapy for an extended period. However, intensive outpatient programs are made to help people transition from inpatient services to outpatient care.

Start Your Recovery Journey with Inpatient Care

When it comes to IOP care, enrollment mostly depends on the individual. Sometimes your treatment team may recommend the service to you if they think you need supervised care for an extended time. But other times, people get enrolled in intensive outpatient treatment because they request the service.

If you are starting your recovery journey, it is wise to start looking for a treatment center that will allow you to grow into a transition program. Not all recovery networks offer these types of intensive treatment practices. Some may have IOP programs in-house and others may refer you to trusted partners in your local area.
