Aetna’s Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Benefits

Aetna is a fantastic insurance company whose vision is “to provide improved access to quality health care services for all Americans.” Having been in business since 1853, they have a history of providing innovative benefits, products, and services. Recently, they became a subsidiary of CVS Health Corporation, offering an even more comprehensive array of health services.

Aetna has four tiers under their Individual ACA Plans: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. In addition, Aetna offers Medicare plans as well. Under all of their projects, addiction and mental health services are covered, at least in part. Specifics will depend on the particular plan you have, but in general, you can expect to have some coverage for:

Which Aetna Plan Should You Consider for Addiction Treatment

If you don’t currently have Aetna but are considering it to help with addiction treatment, coverage details for ACA plans will be rolling out on November 1st. You can get updates directly from Aetna’s site here. In the meantime, consider these tier options:

Platinum

This is a new tier being offered by Aetna. It’s a good choice if you have a substance use disorder and are planning rehab treatment. Your monthly premium will be the highest, but the tradeoff is paying much less to receive care. This tier has the

  • highest monthly premium
  • lowest out-of-pocket costs
  • lowest deductibles, and
  • you can apply for premium discounts

Gold

In this tier, you’ll still have a higher premium to alleviate the cost of medical services over the course of the year, but it’ll be a step below the platinum costs, so it may be more affordable for you monthly. This tier has

  • higher monthly premium
  • lower out-of-pocket costs
  • lower deductibles, and
  • you can apply for premium discounts

Silver

The Silver tier balances monthly premium costs and out-of-pocket expenses. Your monthly payment will be somewhere in the middle, and your deductibles and copays will be a little higher. When you compare the costs, this may be a good choice if you’re planning for outpatient rehab services and can afford a moderate monthly payment. This tier has a

  • moderate monthly premium
  • moderate out-of-pocket costs
  • slightly higher deductibles, and
  • you can still apply for premium discounts

Bronze

The bronze tier is mainly geared towards individuals with minimal health issues who want to protect themselves against a medical crisis. Monthly costs are minimal, but out-of-pocket costs are the highest, which is ideal if you don’t need to see doctors often during the year.

However, if the bronze tier is the only option you can afford monthly, don’t let the target market be a deterrent. Remember that many facilities will offer payment plans for your out-of-pocket costs and you may be able to stagger your payment schedule to alleviate your monthly expenses. Some insurance is usually better than nothing so this might still work for your situation. This tier has the

  • lowest monthly premium
  • highest out-of-pocket expenses
  • highest deductibles, but
  • you can still apply for premium discounts
